SAM BAIR
OUT FOR SEASON
WITH STRESS FRACTURE
Photos
by James K. Wood

Sam Bair, takes his usual lead, but then, as the chase pack
senses a chance to do the unexpected, they close in. Two guys
beat Bair in the 800 for the first time since the Shaler star
was a freshman. The reason? A broken foot. The story
of the season-ending injury and the race
details.

Friday, April 11 - 1st Annual Wildcat Invitational
(Boys only) @ Latrobe HS -
Friday, April 11 - Butler
Invitational @ Butler HS (Boys) - Sam Bair lost his first
800 in Pennsylvania since his freshman year at the Butler Invitational
Friday night. The race began in usual Bair fashion with everyone
postioning themselves for 2nd. A 53.5 opening split will do that.
But during the final 200, Bair unexpectedly began to tie
up. He was caught with 60 meters to go by Mount Lebanon's Andrew
Davidson and Ian Fitzgerald of North Hills. Davidson
set a PR with his 1:54.5 win, while Fitzgerald edged Bair
at the line, both timed in 1:56.2. According to published reports,
Bair has inflamed tendons in his right foot which began to
bother him as soon as the race began. He apparently began to compensate
with his stride, which caused him to tire rapidly. Bair went
to Tennessee for an official visit this weekend and is unsure of
the time needed for recovery from his injury. Andrew Johnson,
North Hills, got off to a great start with a 10.7 100. In addition
to his 2nd in the 800, Fitzgerald won the 1600 in 4:25.37.
Jim O'Toole, North Allegheny, captured
the 3200 in a strong 9:23.6. Calvin
Littlejohn, Butler cleared 6-07 to win the High Jump.
And Mt. Lebanon took both the 4x400 and 4x800 Relays. Results.

well. Hatboro-Horsham's Mike Kenny ran 15:33.6 for the win.

young season. Erin Hannon of Bradford garnered three 1sts
and a 2nd, winning the 100 Hurdles in 16.79 (16:42 Trials), the

Saturday, March 29 - Wallenpaupack
"Iceberg" Relays @ Wallenpaupack HS - If you name
a meet "Iceberg" Relays, it should be little surprise
if the weather turns against you. And that's exactly what happened
at Wallenpaupack HS. The meet began as a comfortably warm one. Located
beside a lake, the area around the track turned into dense fog and
a downpour by the middle distance medley. And by the time the 4x800
runners were toeing the line, the fog was so dense and the rain
so heavy, you couldn't see runners more than 30 yards away. To adjust,
the heats were combined in the 4x800 and 4x400's, which was run
in a torrential downpour. Highlights: Lakeland boys take
seven relays. Coughlin 4x800 in 8:19.8. Tunkhannock's Matt Blaisure
and partner to 12' combined high jump, with Blaisure clearing
6"'8" after clearing 6'2, 6'4, missing @6'6 and then clear
@ 6'8. In the girls competition, Western Wayne took six relays,
but Bethlehem Liberty was deeper, taking three 2nds, one
third, and one 4th to capture the team title. Results
and summary courtesy of Paul McGrane.

going 4:07.61 and 4:13.55, respectively. The West Catholic
boys took two relays, the 4x100 in 44.08 and the 4x200 in 1:31.52.

Saturday, March 22 - Chichester
Relays @ Chichester HS - A nice day for a change at the first-of-the-season
Chichester Relays, which splits into large and small school action
in both track and field relay events. In boys Division I, Downingtown
took five events, but Upper Darby posted two great early
season times, going 43.0 in the 4x100 and 1:29.8 in the 4x200. In
boys Division II, Strath Haven was dominant, taking eight
relays, five on the oval and three in the field, including a strong

March 25, 2003 - While in New York, I got to meet Christopher
Malcolm, Reggie Witherspoon's (right) indoor
coach. With PA's legendary William Reed of Central High as the
holder of the record Witherspoon broke in the 400 at NSIC, it
was only natural for me to cover the story as discussion centered
on which record to count. Reggie's was run from a three-lane stagger,
while Reed's was run from a two-lane stagger. It also gave me
the opportunity to interview Arnie Shiffrin, Reed's high school
coach. The story
was published March 25th on Dyestat,
along with some of the discussion in the T&F community, and
a response from Reggie Witherspoon.
Also while in New York, Matt "Jersey Guy" Soja and I
talked with record-setting Pentathlete Donovan Kilmartin (left)
and his coach at Team Idaho. The story
was also published on Dyestat.
