As expected, William Penn (left
in a photo by Dyestat) broke into the medals both individually
and with relays. The single national championship for a PA athlete
at either the New York or Landover meets was Juanita Broaddus.
She ended her indoor season with a win in the 200 in 24.19. She
had been 2nd in her heat in Saturday's prelims in 24.81. She advanced
to the finals of the 60 meter dash with a 7.60 in the Prelims,
but, according to Dyestat, scratched from the finals because of
a slight groin pull. Broaddus teamed up with Kandis Worthington,
Kneshia Sheard, and Christina Smith to get 2nd in
the 4x200 in 1:40.38 4, losing by just .03. Upper Darby was 6th
in 1:44.15 (Jannea Bridgeford, Jennifer Lewis, Marissa
McGarrell, Simmandi Lawrence). The same William
Penn squad, with Broaddus anchoring, would get 3rd
in the meet's final event, the 4x400, in 3:52.89. Smith
tried the Pentathlon and came away with a 4th place 3224 points.
Her performances were 8.95 in the 60H (1st place), 5-01 in the
HJ, 25-08 in the SP, 16-02.25 in the LJ, and 2:29.65 in the 800.
Pennridge's Brooke Wolfe was in a two-way tie for 5th with
3175 points (9.46, 4-09, 33-05.75, 16-08.5, and 2:28.08. Oxford's
Drew Eckman finished his senior indoor season by going
48.71 in the Prelims and 48.68 in the finals to get 2nd. Michael
Whitehead, Norristown, came within .75 of an inch of a
national title with his Triple Jump of 48-02.75. Also finishing
a great indoor campaign was Hatboro-Horsham. On Saturday
evening, Janine Ricci, Caitlin Klaas, Nicole Murphy
and Megan Rae got 3rd in the DMR in 12:07.20. The Archbishop
Carroll boys were 6th in the DMR in 10:42.92 (James Bucci,
Mike Tilger, Fran Merlie, and Ryan Kincade).
Hatboro-Horsham's same foursome came back Sunday morning
to get 4th in the 4x800 in 9:30.36. Cardinal O'Hara was
7th in 9:33.35, Downingtown 8th in 9:35.88, and Perkiomen
Valley 9th in 9:40.01. Mark Korich, Springfield (Montco)
was 3rd in the 800 in 1:54.02, while for the girls' Hatboro-Horsham
sophomore Caitlin Klaas was 5th in 2:15.57. In the boys'
4x200, North Penn was 5th with a 1:31.23 (Matt Henderson,
Tim Heebner, Phil Riccard, and Kevin Akins.
And Methacton's Blake Taylor and St.Joseph's Prep's Juan
Cave were tied for 6th in the High Jump, clearing 6-04.75.
In the Pole Vault, it wasn't a good day for PA's best. Lindsey
and Courtney Regan, Easton, no-heighted, while Hickory's
Andrew Rademacher was 12th. State Shot Put champ Tyree
Suber of Glen Mills gave everything he had going for the
win, but fouled three times for no distance.
