Full Coverage on Dyestat

Don Rich was onsite covering the meet for Dyestat. Coverage is geared toward National performances. As many PA performances were captured in pix as possible.

Every time you turned around, there was someone from West Catholic or Cardinal O'Hara lining up to compete. And compete they did, earning medals on a national stage in three relays each.

It started on FRIDAY with the girls from West Catholic, when they placed 5th in the Sprint Medley in 4:03.52. A short time later, it was Cardinal O'Hara's turne. Behind a strong opening 1200 leg from Mike Callanan in 3:12.8, they got into the race early. That allowed Tom O'Brien to use his 51.1 to set up the 800 and 1600 legs. With his 1:56.5, Bernie Rendler came from the back of the lead pack to hand anchor Steve Hallinan the baton and a slight lead. Hallinan battled Fordham Prep's Brian McCabe the entire way, posting a 4:20.6 split and coming up just short of the win (despite the vocal efforts of coach Tom Kennedy-right). O'Hara went 10:21.29 for 2nd. Also on Friday, St. Hubert's anchor Amy Kelly pulled her relay to a 3rd place time of 12:18.51. Wyomissing missed a medal by less than a second, getting 7th in 12:29.24. Pennsbury senior Al Gregory was 3rd in the Long Jump with an effort of 22-09.75 on Friday. And in a very deep field, Carson Pickens, Germantown Friends, won a 6th place medal in the Boys High Jump, clearing 6-04.

If it was SATURDAY, it must have been West Catholic and O'Hara again. Early in the afternoon, O'Hara captured 3rd in the 4xMile in 17:52.82 behind Vince Gravelle, Steve Hallinan, Daniel Boyle, and Mike Callanan. They could rest again until Sunday. But West Catholic had a lot of Saturday work to keep in the mix for Sunday. They would get the final qualifying spot in the 4x200 in 1:41.65. Nicole Leach, West Catholic, also had to run a prelim in the 400, getting the 3rd fastest time of the day in 55.68. In the girls' 4xMile, Wyomissing was 4th in 21:19.77 behind Amy Huss, Karen Rogers, Ashley Iwanowski and Debbie Huss. Al Gregory, Pennsbury, advanced to the Semis of the 60 meter dash. Two PA athletes medaled in the Shot Put on Saturday, with Cardinal O'Hara's Bob McDade 3rd with his throw of 55-01.50, and Wyomissing's Jon Hart 5th, going 54-01.00.

SUNDAY
, and it was back to work for Cardinal O'Hara and West Catholic. Bernie Rendler, Steve Hallinan, Mike Callinan and Dan Boyle ran a tough race, getting the top time in PA this season with a 7:59.18, good enough for 5th place. Nicole Leach led off the action for her team in the early afternoon with a 55.87 effort in the 400, getting 6th overall. Within the hour, teammate Latavia Thomas ran in a very strong field of the 800 which yielded two of the top five all-time prep performances. She came from 8th place over the final 75 meters to get 6th, and the last medal, by just .01 in 2:10.86, a PR indoor or outdoor by two seconds. Hershey's Angie Saterstad added a 2nd place finish in the two-mile to her resume, overtaking two of the country's best over the last 100 meters, going 10:49.85. Late in the afternoon, after a very brief rest, Leach and Thomas were joined by their teammates as they hit the featured races, the short relays.West Catholic medalled in both, going 1:40.82 for 6th in the 4x200, and 3:52.22 for 5th in the 4x400. Joining Leach and Thomas on the 1600 relay squad were Nia Ali and Ciarra Lawson.

Kimarra McDonald of Willingboro NJ (Merion Mercy) and Tiffany Abney (Merion Mercy), both representing the United Stars Track Club of Philadelphia, did not compete. McDonald injured her him the week prior to the meet, and Abney came down with the flu.
