A two-frosh, two-soph West Catholic relay squad that garnered
two medals in New York. This will be a fun group to watch as
they become an even faster team.
Friday-Sunday, March 14-16, 2003 - National Scholastic Indoor
Championships @ the Armory, NYC - Every time you turned around,
there was someone from West Catholic or Cardinal O'Hara
lining up to compete. And compete they did, earning medals on
a national stage in three relays each. It started on FRIDAY
with the girls from West Catholic, when they placed 5th
in the Sprint Medley in 4:03.52. A short time later, it was
Cardinal O'Hara's turne. Behind a strong opening 1200
leg from Mike Callanan in 3:12.8, they got into the race
early. That allowed Tom O'Brien to use his 51.1 to set
up the 800 and 1600 legs. With his 1:56.5, Bernie Rendler
came from the back of the lead pack to hand anchor Steve Hallinan
the baton and a slight lead. Hallinan battled Fordham
Prep's Brian McCabe the entire way, posting a 4:20.6
split and coming up just short of the win. O'Hara went
10:21.29 for 2nd. Also on Friday, St. Hubert's anchor
Amy Kelly pulled her relay to a 3rd place time of 12:18.51.
Wyomissing missed a medal by less than a second, getting
7th in 12:29.24. Pennsbury senior Al Gregory was 3rd
in the Long Jump with an effort of 22-09.75 on Friday. And in
a very deep field, Carson Pickens, Germantown Friends,
won a 6th place medal in the Boys High Jump, clearing 6-04.
If it was SATURDAY, it must have been West Catholic
and O'Hara again. Early in the afternoon, O'Hara
captured 3rd in the 4xMile in 17:52.82 behind Vince Gravelle,
Steve Hallinan, Daniel Boyle, and Mike Callanan.
They could rest again until Sunday. But West Catholic
had a lot of Saturday work to keep in the mix for Sunday. They
would get the final qualifying spot in the 4x200 in 1:41.65.
Nicole Leach, West Catholic, also had to run a prelim
in the 400, getting the 3rd fastest time of the day in 55.68.
In the girls' 4xMile, Wyomissing was 4th in 21:19.77
behind Amy Huss, Karen Rogers, Ashley Iwanowski
and Debbie Huss. Al Gregory, Pennsbury, advanced
to the Semis of the 60 meter dash. Two PA athletes medaled in
the Shot Put on Saturday, with Cardinal O'Hara's Bob McDade
3rd with his throw of 55-01.50, and Wyomissing's Jon Hart
5th, going 54-01.00. SUNDAY, and it was back to work
for Cardinal O'Hara and West Catholic. Bernie Rendler,
Steve Hallinan, Mike Callinan and Dan Boyle
ran a tough race, getting the top time in PA this season with
a 7:59.18, good enough for 5th place. Nicole Leach led
off the action for her team in the early afternoon with a 55.87
effort in the 400, getting 6th overall. Within the hour, teammate
Latavia Thomas ran in a very strong field of the 800
which yielded two of the top five all-time prep performances.
She came from 8th place over the final 75 meters to get 6th,
and the last medal, by just .01 in 2:10.86, a PR indoor or outdoor
by two seconds. Hershey's Angie Saterstad added a 2nd
place finish in the two-mile to her resume, overtaking two of
the country's best over the last 100 meters, going 10:49.85.
Late in the afternoon, after a very brief rest, Leach
and Thomas were joined by their teammates as they hit
the featured races, the short relays.West Catholic medalled
in both, going 1:40.82 for 6th in the 4x200, and 3:52.22 for
5th in the 4x400. Joining Leach and Thomas on
the 1600 relay squad were Nia Ali and Ciarra Lawson.
Kimarra McDonald of Willingboro NJ (Merion Mercy) and
Tiffany Abney (Merion Mercy), both representing the United
Stars Track Club of Philadelphia, did not compete. McDonald
injured her him the week prior to the meet, and Abney came down
with the flu. PA

Saturday-Sunday, March 15-16, 2003 - Nike Indoor Classic @ Landover,
MD - As expected, William Penn broke into the medals
both individually and with relays. The single national championship
for a PA athlete at either the New York or Landover meets was
Juanita Broaddus. She ended her indoor season with a
win in the 200 in 24.19. She had been 2nd in her heat in Saturday's
prelims in 24.81. She advanced to the finals of the 60 meter
dash with a 7.60 in the Prelims, but, according to Dyestat,
scratched from the finals because of a slight groin pull. Broaddus
teamed up with Kandis Worthington, Kneshia Sheard,
and Christina Smith to get 2nd in the 4x200 in 1:40.38
4, losing by just .03. Upper Darby was 6th in 1:44.15 (Jannea
Bridgeford, Jennifer Lewis, Marissa McGarrell,
Simmandi Lawrence). The same William Penn squad,
with Broaddus anchoring, would get 3rd in the meet's
final event, the 4x400, in 3:52.89. Smith tried the Pentathlon
and came away with a 4th place 3224 points. Her performances
were 8.95 in the 60H (1st place), 5-01 in the HJ, 25-08 in the
SP, 16-02.25 in the LJ, and 2:29.65 in the 800. Pennridge's
Brooke Wolfe was in a two-way tie for 5th with 3175 points
(9.46, 4-09, 33-05.75, 16-08.5, and 2:28.08. Oxford's Drew Eckman
finished his senior indoor season by going 48.71 in the Prelims
and 48.68 in the finals to get 2nd. Michael Whitehead,
Norristown, came within .75 of an inch of a national title with
his Triple Jump of 48-02.75. Also finishing a great indoor campaign
was Hatboro-Horsham. On Saturday evening, Janine Ricci,
Caitlin Klaas, Nicole Murphy and Megan Rae
got 3rd in the DMR in 12:07.20. The Archbishop Carroll
boys were 6th in the DMR in 10:42.92 (James Bucci, Mike
Tilger, Fran Merlie, and Ryan Kincade).
Hatboro-Horsham's same foursome came back Sunday morning
to get 4th in the 4x800 in 9:30.36. Cardinal O'Hara was
7th in 9:33.35, Downingtown 8th in 9:35.88, and Perkiomen
Valley 9th in 9:40.01. Mark Korich, Springfield (Montco)
was 3rd in the 800 in 1:54.02, while for the girls' Hatboro-Horsham
sophomore Caitlin Klaas was 5th in 2:15.57. In the boys'
4x200, North Penn was 5th with a 1:31.23 (Matt Henderson,
Tim Heebner, Phil Riccard, and Kevin Akins.
And Methacton's Blake Taylor and St.Joseph's Prep's Juan
Cave were tied for 6th in the High Jump, clearing 6-04.75.
In the Pole Vault, it wasn't a good day for PA's best. Lindsey
and Courtney Regan, Easton, no-heighted, while Hickory's
Andrew Rademacher was 12th. State Shot Put champ Tyree
Suber of Glen Mills gave everything he had going for
the win, but fouled three times for no distance. PA

Saturday, March 4, 2003 - Completion of snow-delayed
PCL
Championships - Second Half 3/4 @ Widener University
| Somehow they found the energy to give their best, even if
it was only three days after the State Championships. The completion
of the snow-delayed PCL Championships resumed at Widener University.
State 800 champ Latavia Thomas went 2:17.37 to hold off
a determined Mary Debevec of Cardinal O'Hara, 2nd in
2:19.49. Debevec had set a PR in the opening leg of the state
4x800 to give her team a lead. O'Hara took the PCL 3200 relay
with a 9:49.89. Nicole Leach, West Catholic, was named
the Track athlete of the meet with her third individual championship,
adding the 200 (25.32) to her 60 dash and 400 wins at Lehigh.
Denise Tegkowski was the Field athlete of the meet, winning
the Triple Jump with a 34-09 effort. She had taken the Long
Jump at Lehigh, and gotten a 4th in the 60 Hurdles. The 3000
was strong, as expected, as teammates Rachel Papin and
Amy Kelly of St. Hubert's battled to a one-two, with
Papin winning by .20 in 10:33.61. Papin had gone 20 seconds
faster at States in getting 2nd place. Steve Hallinan
helped his team take the 4x800 in 8:27.36, while also earning
a championship in the 3000 in 9:08.49. He was named the meet's
top Track athlete after winning the two distance races, the
Mile at Lehigh. O'Hara also took the 4x400 in 3:37.29.
Archbishop Ryan was the girls' team champion, while Cardinal
O'Hara took the boys' title. Results

PTFCA
INDOOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS @ PENN STATE UNIVERSITY (PennTrack
on site) - Five Meet Records. Top five US performances
including a 63-04.25 Shot Put, a 23-10.50 Long Jump, and a 47.65
400. Dropped batons by the favorites. Gutsy winning performances
by lots of underdogs. Even more snow is PA. All in all, it was
your typical PTFCA Indoor Championship Meet. ONE OF THE TOP
THREE INDOOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETS IN THE US YEAR AFTER YEAR!
Glen Mills' Tyree Suber (below)
simply keeps getting better each week this winter. Working
his way past 60 feet a few weeks ago, then throwing it greater
than that distance at least three times Saturday, his last two
were over 63', including the final meet record 63-04.25. He
was selected male athlete of the meet hands down. And the girls
top performer was not unexpected, nor were the times. William
Penn's Juanita Broaddus (above)
took the 200 in 24.35, the 400 in 54.52, was 3rd in the
60 in 7.76 and gave her team a chance to win the 4x400. The
team that finished 2nd overall was West Catholic, who
also captured the 4x200. Taking the boys title after Glen
Mills was DQed in the 4x200 and suffered a baton drop in
the 4x400, was District 1's Pennsbury. Al Gregory contributed
to many of team's points, winning the Long Jump in a top US
effort of 23-10.50, getting 2nd in the 60, and running on the
winning 4x200. Not to be lost in the team titles are the additional
four meet
records. Drew Eckman, Oxford (right-PHOTO
BY CRAIG LOWTHERT), positioned himself at the 150 for
a drive that would take him over a second-and-a-half faster
than the prior week on Lehigh's flat 200. His 47.65 is US#3.
Dior Lowry, Martin Luther King (Philly) set three PRs
last week at the Meet of Champs, then blew past the meet record
8.09 in the 60 hurdles, going 8.05 in the finals. And in the
home town of State College/Penn State's Kevin Dare, who
was killed in a Pole Vault accident at last year's Big Ten Indoor
Championships, Hickory junior Andrew Rademacher cleared
a meet record 15-06. His third effort at a state record 16-01
was close. Mark Korich, Springfield Montco, ran another
nice double, winning the Mile in 4:17.88 and getting 2nd in
the 800 in 1:55.29 to Chris Kessler, Sun Valley, 1:54.45.
He'll run the 800 at the Nike Indoor Classic. Two hot 4x800's
as the Philadelphia Catholic League went one-two behind Bonner's
8:03.18 and LaSalle's 8:04.67. In addition to the relay
victories, West Catholic's win was powered by Frosh Latavia
Thomas, 2:13.55 800 winner, and Nicole Leach's 2nd in
400 in 54.91 and 3rd in 200 in 24.75. There were some close
calls on Meet Records in the girls races, but the only one that
fell was the 4x800 as little discussion centered on Gwynedd
Mercy Academy, who then went out to power to a 9:20.93.
Also breaking the record of the 2000 Conestoga squad
was Haverford HS, 2nd in 9:21.73. Cardinal O'Hara
led early but suffered a dropped baton. Kim Rorabaugh,
Purchase Line took the Shot Put with her 40-05.50. Getting with
.09 of the meet record was Upper Darby's
Jannea Bridgeford, 7.59 60. And Christina Smith,
William Penn, came with .07 of the 60 Hurdle record with her
8.92. Janine Ricci, Hatboro-Horsham ran a tough but effective
triple for her 3rd place team, getting 1st in the Mile in 5:03.50,
3rd in the 3000 in 10:20.37, and anchoring to a 3rd in the 4x800
(9:28.23). Emily Kruger, Lampeter-Strasburg, took the
3000 in 9:59.88. PA INDOOR WINNERS'S

PREVIEW: Defending Indoor State Champs go for repeats as William
Penn's Juanita Broaddus goes for the 200 again, St. Hubert's
Amy Kelly in the Mile, and West Allegheny's Christine
Taranto in the 3000. In the boys competition, defending
state champs are all field athletes, including Al Gregory
(Pennsbury) in the Long Jump, Mike Whitehead (Norristown)
in the Triple Jump, and Andrew Rademacher (Hickory) in
the Pole Vault. Tiffany Abney will not defend her 400
title. She's competing this weekend at the USATF Indoor Championships
in Boston. Angie Saterstad participated in the Colgate
Women's Games, and will not compete. While every event should
be spectacular, you can't help but get pumped for the girls'
4x800 as four the country's best, Hatboro-Horsham,(above
@ DVGTCA MOC 2/21) Cardinal O'Hara, Haverford
and Perkiomen Valley, settle the question for this season
once and for all. See ya in State College! Be patient on coverage.
I'll be traveling to East Stroudsburg (having missed my son's
5000 at PSAC's late Saturday) to see him run the 3000 on Sunday.
Let's hope the wireless internet works!
Friday, February 28 - PA @ USATF Indoor
Championships, Reggie Lewis Center, Boston MA - Tiffany Abney,
United Stars, finished fourth in the first round of the 400
in 55.36 and did not advance. Results
from Day One.

Saturday, February 22 - TFCAGP
Division 1&2 Meet of Champions @ Lehigh University (PennTrack
on site) - The boys Meet of Champs was simply the best
PA meet of the season, as 31 performances qualify for national
rankings, highlighted by six ones in the Triple Jump and a three-PR
day for the top hurdler in PA. Norristown's Mike Whitehead
continued his great season with a US#5 48-04.50. Also going
over 46 feet were Galen Rivers, Great Valley (48-02.75),Blake
Taylor, Methacton (47-02), and Adam Woodford,
Downingtown (46-03). North Penn's Dan Jarques went 44-08.75,
while Central's Marcus Dexter was 6th with his 44-08.25
effort. Dior Lowry, Martin Luther King, set a PR every
time he ran his specialty, the 60 meter hurdles, going 8.22,
8.13 and 8.11 respectively. Lowry was pleased with his day.
"My final was clean. But I was behind at the first hurdle,
so when I get my start working, I can go faster." Adam
Woodford, Downingtown, was 2nd in the 60 Hurdles in 8.40. The
High Jump boasted some strong leaps, with Carlson Pickins
of Germantown Friends School cleared 6-08, as did Taylor
(yes, the same one who went 47-02 in the Triple Jump). St. Joseph's
Prep's Juan Cave was third with his 6-07 effort, while
Bill Morris, Devon Prep, cleared 6-04. Oxford's Drew
Eckman broke 50 again, going 49.25. In the Relays, North
Penn held off a hard-charging Strath Haven by just
.8 in the 4x200 with a 1:32.19. They also took the 4x800 in
8:10.78, ahead of Bonner (8:14.15), and LaSalle
(8:14.45). Central ran the top DMR in PA behind Mike
Syrnick 3:08.0, Rayon Fulton 51.9, Mike Taras
2:04.7, and Jon Cartwright 4:32.4 for their 10:36.82.
LaSalle was 2nd in 10:44.76. Quakertown senior Adam Breisch
ran the 2nd fastest PA mile of the year (4:20.70), pulling away
from Mark Korich, Springfield (Montco), 2nd in 4:22.30.
But Korish came back in the 3000 to set a meet record
of 8:57.32. Pennsbury's Al Gregory had a two-win day
with his 22-10.50 Long Jump and 6.99 (twice) and 7.03 once in
the 60 Dash. Steve Slayton, Conwell-Egan, was 2nd in
the 60 finals in 7.00. Slayton also leapt 22-01.50 in
the LJ to get 2nd to Gregory. Results

Dematha and Glen Mills traded relay wins, with
the PA school winning by .3 in 1:31.67 in the 4x200, and Dematha
returning the favor in the 4x400 with their 3:26.44. Glen
Mills was timed in 3:28.19. Lewistown's Emily Lepley
captured the 60 Hurdles in 9:12, with Pennridge's Brooke Wolfe

Triple Jump with a leap of 37-06. Wolfe went 37-02.25
for second. Dematha and Archbishop Carroll made
the trip from DC looking for good competition (and a great track),
and came away with improved top US performances. Sophomore Dematha
sprinter Anthony Wiseman added five meters to his usual
55 meter race and added a US#5 to his resume with a 6.86 in
the Finals. Teammate Joshua Wilson was 2nd in 7.09. Wiseman
also took the 200 in a US#13 22.30. In the 400, Carrol's (DC)
Randy Lee improved US ranking to #7. The freshman went
48.87 on the banked track. Bradford's Shawn Colligan

March
25, 2003 - While in New York, I got to meet Christopher Malcolm,
Reggie Witherspoon's (right) indoor
coach. With PA's legendary William Reed of Central High as the
holder of the record Witherspoon broke in the 400 at NSIC, it
was only natural for me to cover the story as discussion centered
on which record to count. Reggie's was run from a three-lane stagger,
while Reed's was run from a two-lane stagger. It also gave me
the opportunity to interview Arnie Shiffrin, Reed's high school
coach. The story
was published March 25th on Dyestat,
along with some of the discussion in the T&F community, and
a response from Reggie Witherspoon.
Also
while in New York, Matt "Jersey Guy" Soja and I talked
with record-setting Pentathlete Donovan Kilmartin (right)
of Idaho. The story
was also published on Dyestat.

Hickory Pole Vaulter
Andrew Rademacher
reached 14'0 as a freshman, 15'0 as a sophomore, and is approaching
his junior goal of 16'0. His 2003 Indoor PR of 15' 9 gained
