November, 2002 - Track & Field
News unveiled their 2002 High School All-American team in their
November issue, and it includes quite a few Pennsylvania athletes.

August 20, 2002 - Responding to the February death of Penn State
pole vaulter Kevin Dare at the Indoor Conference Championships,
the Big Ten Conference has announced new rules in addition to
those already recommended by the NCAA. The story

July, 2002 - Bishop Guilfoyle's
Sonja Hinish selected to represent the U.S. in the Summer
Biathlon World Championships. More in News.
June 21, 2002 - Serene Ross (Wilmington
Area) a graduate of Purdue this year, improved her new American
Record she set May 30 to win the NCAA Championships, to 60.06m
197-00, at the USATF Outdoor Championships. Her NCAA throw of
59.64m (195-08), broke the record of Lynda Blutreich (58.61m).
As a high school senior in 1997, she was 3rd in the Discus with
a throw of 129-1
and 2nd in the Javelin with her 152-5 in AA competition at States.
July 11, 2002 - From Walt Murphy's News and Reporting Service,
Foot Locker nationals are returning to San Diego, CA for 2002.

July 8, 2002 - Another tragedy strikes the PA T&F community
as Glen Mills' Omain Gullette is killed in a drive by shooting.

July 6, 2002 - All in all, PA made a great showing in
the 2002 Outdoor season, landing two athletes as top of their
respective events in the Dyestat Elite Rankings, and
grabbing top five spots with six individuals and two relays.

July 5, 2002 - Dyestat, the national
home of US HS T&F, points out that for a few days ending
late morning July 5, the Foot Locker XC web site listed
San Diego as the site of the 2003 high school XC championships
December 14. The link has now been changed to contain the date,
but no location. The meet, was the Kinney Foot Locker Championships
from 1979 until Foot Locker bought Kinney in 1993, moved to
Disney World in 1997. It would be held this year in Balboa Park,
San Diego. There has been no official announcement, according
to Dyestat.
July 2, 2002 - Another tragedy strikes a member of the PA
T&F community Saturday June 29, 2002 as Glen Mills' Omain
Gullette was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting near
his home in Southwest Philadelphia. A recent graduate of the
Delaware County school, Gullette had been the Student Government
President his senior year. He was an All-State football player
who was headed to Syracuse University on a full scholarship.
In T&F, he was 2nd in the SP in 2001 Outdoor States, and
3rd this past indoor season. The full story in the Philadelphia Daily News.
June 1, 2002 - At the NCAA Division I Meet @ LSU, former
PA prep stars Serene Ross (Wilmington Area) a senior
competing for Purdue, and Kristin Price (Penn-Trafford)
an NC State sophomore, posted exceptional performances. Ross
simply set a new American Record on 5/30 in the Javelin with
a throw of 59.64m (195-08), to break the record of Lynda Blutreich
(58.61m). Price pulled off an incredible distance All-American
performance, taking the 10,000m Championship 5/29 with her 34:26.63.
She then came back 5/31 to get 3rd in the 5,000m with a time
of 16:01.25, less than eight seconds out of 1st. DI Results. On Friday, 5/24, former Providence
All-American (XC Division I 15th 1997) Rachel Hixson
(Penncrest HS, Media) earned a Division II All-American certificate
running in her final college meet for West Chester University,
finishing 4th in the 3000 Steeplechase in 11:02.52. Former Quakertown
star Kathy Breisch, running for Edinboro Univiversity,
finished 6th in 11:15.35, also earning All-American. Link to

the PIAA selection of Hershey as the site for the next 3 PIAA

April 19, 2002 - Angie Saterstad has
been reinstated to her team following a favorable ruling by
a PIAA District III Rules Committee Hearing on Wednesday,
4/17. Story in Heard Around the Track.
April 18, 2002 - Penn State University lands the previous two PIAA
AAA Boys XC State Champs, plus a transfer from Kent State
- Great Valley's Eamon Brazunus. Shawn Cavanaugh of Mount
Lebanon (2000) and Dan Mazzocco of Baldwin (2001) commit to
run fo the Nittany Lions. Cavanaugh, however, will not be
competing the rest of his HS career, after breaking his foot
while running. We'll miss ya Shawn.
April 9, 2002 - An elite PA runner has been locked out of
her team's practices and meets as her school district confirms
an investigation is underway. MORE.

March 4, 2002 - Steve Craig, North Penn, says he's committing
to Duke.PA Elites on National Weekly Honor List - Dyestat
Nike Athlete of the Week#8 thru 2/14 includes four PA girls
as honorable mention: Karina Francis PA jr - 7.46 60m US#3t;
Tiffany Abney PA jr - 54.16 400m US#2; Sheena Gordon - 5-10
