4/14-PA Performances at the Arcadia Invit.-Calif.

By Don Rich
Date: 4/15/2001

Pennsylvania was well represented by six athletes at the Arcadia Invitational held Saturday, April 14, in California. Baldwin School's Julia Pudlin accomplish both goals. William Penn excelled individually and in the relays. And Fairview's Kim Stuyvesant finished in the top ten.

With a cool light breeze and low humidity, some of the nation's best high school women distance runners were poised to launch some fast times. And that's exactly what happened, as 14 athletes in the elite field broke 11 minutes in the 3200.

One of those was the fourth place finisher, Julia Pudlin, who set a PR by eleven seconds, running a 10:27.51, clocking 5:11 and 5:16 miles.

Julia's training of 40 mile, two interval weeks is back to its cross country form when she was knocking down course records and competition at almost every turn.

But front-running in cross is one thing. Mixing it up with an elite field on the oval is something else. And this race was crowded with not just people, but fast ones who all wanted to be at the front.

"I wanted to hang back at the start. But I got boxed in and ran at least a lap in lane two. There was a lot of juggling the first mile. It was really very bothersome."

But Julia hung tough, and was positioned well at the mile with the lead pack. It was soon after that eventual winner Megan Kaltenbach, 3rd place finisher Laura Zeigle, and 5th place finisher Alison Tubbs moved out. Julia stayed close, but was also passed with about 3/4 mile to go by 2nd place finisher Anita Siraki.

She kept working, and was rewarded by passing Tubbs with about 50 meters to go.

She had two goals for the race, and both were achieved. Getting a medal (Top Five), and breaking 10:30 for the first time.

Julia's next stop will be the Penn Relays High School Girls Championship of America 3000 on Thursday, April 26, 2001, where she is seeded second.
