Saturday, October 12: William Tennent Invitational
@ William Tennent HS with PIX PAGES. -
Some of Virginia's (and the country's) best came north, and took the top three spots. Jamestown senior Jonna Reinhardt expected (and hoped) to be going for the course record held jointly by former teammate Bryce Ruiz and PA's Danny Coval. But those plans were dashed when, ten minutes before the race, his coach told him "your buddies are here." The buddies he was referring to were Thomas Jeffereson's Christo Landry and Keith Bechtol, who had beaten Reinhardt in mid-September when Jonna was recovering from a virus. "That changed my stragegy. I had to switch from thinking about time, to thinking about the win. I thought I had a better kick, and I did. It was a good surprise. I'm glad they were here." Reinhardt won in 15:01, but US#9 Jefferson tallied just 32 points for the team win. Previously undefeated Adam Breisch, Quakertown, was 4th in 15:39. In the girls' race, Allentown Central Catholic's Frances Koons led wire-to-wire, answering every challenge from Hatboro Horsham's Janine Ricci, to win in 18:05. But Ricci's squad took the team win with just 68 points. Results courtesy of Ted Abel, William Tennent HS.

Saturday, October 12: Delaware County Championships @ Rose Tree Park - There was absolutely no resistance from the Delaware County teams as Cardinal O'Hara's boys and girls harriers simply dominated the field, easily winning both individual and team titles. The mild surprise of the meet was O'Hara's Vince Gravelle winning the championship by 13 seconds over teammate Steve Hallinan, going 16:04. O'Hara tallied just 32 points (1-2-5-6-18). Monsignor Bonner was 2nd with 75 points. In the girls' race, O'Hara swept the top three spots and finished with just 34 points, 66 better than 2nd place Haverford. Frosh prodigy Katie Kelly ran a strong 19:00, to win the individual title. Teammate Danielle Schopf was 2nd, 21 seconds back, while Mary Debevec, finished 3rd in 19:26. Results courtesy of Delaware County Road Runners Club.

Saturday, October 12: Rocky Grove Invitational
@ Two Mile Run County Park, Dempseytown -
West Allegheny's Christine Taranto toured the 5K course in a strong 18:45 to win by just three seconds over Eisenhower senior Heather Wilmoth. Elk County took the girs' team title behind the 6th place finish of Erica Hoffman in 20:41.8. Twin Valley was just five points back with 100. General McLane took the boys' title with 53 points behind the 2nd place finish of junior Hayden Harrison in 16:24.5. Shawn Moore, Twin Valley, was 1st in 16:20.5. Results.

Saturday, October 12: George School Invitational @ The George School, Newtown - New Hope-Solebury's Joanna Marlow was the top PA finisher, getting 2nd in 19:36, 20 seconds behind Lawrenceville's (NJ) Becky MacKenzie, who led her team to a 21 point win over Germantown Academy. Lawrenceville also took the boys' race behind the 2nd place 17:26 of Andrew Alvarez. Germantown Friends' Ian Mactavish won the race by a comfortable margin in 16:57. Results.

Saturday, October 12: PA @ Manhattan Invitational, Van Cortlandt Park, NYC - Cheryl Dingman, North Penn, continued her good season with a 2nd place 15:40.7 in the Girls' B Race over the muddy 2.5 Van Cortlandt layout. North Penn finished 3rd as a team. St. Hubert's was 2nd in the Girls' D Race behind the 6th place 15:53.2 by Rachel Papin, and 8th place 15:58.4 by Amy Kelly. Archbishop Ryan's Jeanine Walsh was 18th in the Girls' A Race with a 16:46.1. In the Boys' B Race, Mike Kenny led Hatboro-Horsham to a 6th place finish with his 4th place 13:05.5. Ryan's Dennis O'Connor was 19th in the Boys' C Race, going 13:58.9. Ryan was 5th as a team. The North Penn boys were 7th in the Boys' F Race, as Ian Maurer was 26th in 13:46.7. Photo coverage on Dyestat. Results on Armorytrack.com for girls' and boys' races.

Tuesday, October 8: Midwestern Athletic Conference Championships @ Brush Creek Park - The Quaker Valley girls and boys teams took titles, but not without a fight. Zach Thomas led both his team and other individuals with his 1st place 16:58 (betters Zack Dorman's 2001 course record of 17:16). Ellwood City was 2nd, ten points back. West Allegheny's Christine Taranto took the girls' individual title in 19:11 (betters 19:45 course record of Lauren Shaffer in 1999). But Quaker Valley, behind the 3rd place finish of Maxine Markfield in 19:55, captured a five-point win over Montour. Moon Area's Sam Howard was 2nd in 19:47. Results courtesy of RunHigh.com.

Saturday, October 5: (PENNTRACK ONSITE) Steel City Invitational @ Coatesville High School (WITH TWO PIX PAGES) - NE US#9 Council Rock-North placed no one above 13th, but no scorer after 21st to tally just 77 points, normally good enough to win an invite the size of a Steel City. But NE US#6, US#25 West Chester Henderson started their scoring with 1-2, then placed three more in the teens, twenties and low-thirties to score just 69 points. The narrow margin has to set up some great scenarios for both Districts and States. The 1-2 was, as expected, Ian Gottesfeld and Greg Williams, the junior-duo who will terrorize opponents for another year, as well. The 16:11.2-16:12.4 were good times on the warm, humid day. Part-time runner/soccer player Eric ("the soccer season's almost over") Fleming finished a strong third in 16:17.8. In the girls' race, it was sophomore Janelle Young, (coming off a stellar 4th place showing at the Great American Elite race 9/28) of Cedar Cliff who used a strong closing kick to take Lampeter-Strasburg's Emily Kruger by just six seconds, going 18:55.4. But it was Katie Papenberg of Red Lion who, with the race nearly in hand closing on the top of the race's monster hill, took an early turn, missed a marker, and lost eight spots after turning around to correct the mistake. She would finish 5th in 19:25.8. "It won't happen again" according to coach Marv Berkowitz. "She's a real student of the sport, and this was a memorable lesson." Cardinal O'Hara used three medalists and a strong 4-5 to get just 82 points to win by more than 100. They were led again by frosh phenom Katie Kelly, who finished in 7th place @ 19:45.9. Results courtesy of John Fuchs, The Tracker, and Coatesville HS

Saturday, October 5: 2nd Annual Red Flash Invitational
@ St. Francis University:
Leanna Nastase of Forest Hills, continued her strong season with a 19:48.6, a 1:40-second victory over the tough St. Francis University course. But it was Penns Valley with five in the top 20 behind Erin Deihl's 22:26.9 7th place that earned the team win with 65 points. Westmont Hilltop's David Mock took the boys title with his 16:51.2. But Virginia's Massaponax placed five in the top 31 behind Michael Disilvestro's 4th place 17:56.1 for 74 points and the team win. Hollidaysburg Area was 2nd with 102 points. But Plum, behind Rachel Twigg's 2nd place 19:47, placed six runners in the top nine with a 1:02 spread on one-five. Their 24 points was 18 better than 2nd place Meadville. Plum's margin was a narrow six points over Grove City in the boys' race, behind Cam Christeson's 16:35 4th place. Grove City's Paul Masterone, and teammate Chris Dumbroski, were one-two, going 16:00-16:23, respectively. Varsity Results courtesy of Runners' High

***STATE COURSE & TIMING NEWS***
And then there was one. The PIAA has released a map of the REVISED & OFFICIAL course for States. It's not the one the coaches helped to design earlier this season, but it looks like an improvement. Download our PDF that has both the original, somewhat controversial course, and the one proposed by the PA coaches. Other big news is on the timing. The PIAA will use the ChampionChip technology (computer chips attached to athletes' shoes) for the first time in a state meet. The official 2002 PIAA rules are in this large PDF, or read about the technology itself at the timing company's site.
